The November 2024 election is significant. For those desiring to vote as a Christian, it may require an understanding of shrewdness and the "proximate."
There are almost no similarities between Abraham Lincoln and Donald Trump—white men born in the United States, granted. Trump’s policies and also personal biases, which he chooses to make very public, absolutely do not lift up the trampled, the abused, the impoverished, the ill, or minorities. And, important to me, the religious interests and freedoms of all United States citizens. Dangerous is the ability to set aside character and integrity, particularly based on current and historical facts, so that one’s own agenda “might” be better served. I completely disagree with your article. Also, I am surprised of your choice to speak of your Democrat friends and, likely, neighbors and congregants, as blooming evil….. “restrain[ing] the rampant evil that the Democratic Party’s unabashed extremism has bloomed.” Have you forgotten, poor Wormwood, how evil actually works?
Linda, thank you so much for your comments and sharing your opinions with me. It’s obvious we won’t convince one another differently in our thoughts. But that’s ok, and it’s the joy of dialogue and expression. I do want to make sure to clarify areas so that you’re not misunderstanding me.
I would clarify that the comparison to Lincoln was that of his willingness to allow former political rivals into his inner circle and create a cabinet from them. Many have made that comparison - from all sides of the political aisle.
Also, I made pretty clear in the article that the rampant evil is what has bloomed from the Democratic Party’s unabashed extremism. Perhaps it’s nuanced, but I didn’t say my friends who are Democrats are evil. I said that the extremism of the Party have led to the blooming of evil.
Finally, thank you for pointing out the need to defend and champion and minister and serve “the trampled, the abused, the impoverished, the ill, or minorities.” It’s curious why so many minorities, poor and even migrants are supporting Trump with enthusiasm - dramatic increases from 2016 and 2020 - if his policies were so bad.
I hope you and your family are thriving and experiencing beauty and grace. I’m confident you reflect that. I appreciate and respect you and am thankful for you taking the time to respond.
Not surprisingly, I disagree whole heartedly. Trump’s refusal to castigate Robinson in NC and his willingness to demonize migrants is symptomatic of his penchant to reward loyalists and exploit the most vulnerable. At the constitutional level, even if you want to lay aside religious commitments, Trump is a disaster. When you have officials from the Bush, Reagan, and even Trump administration arguing the Trump is a threat to constitutional democracy, then people should listen up. If you are asking about platforms, I think those Republicans would ask whether you care about democracy or whether you care about a personality. I fear your argument tilts to the latter, and worse yet, to the twisted claims espoused by Christian nationalists.
You're right. I'm not surprised! ;) Thanks so much for sharing your opinion. I do appreciate that so much. I’m glad you’re not on the sidelines either. Love you and best wishes for those Baylor Bears this season! Sorry about this past weekend's gut-wrenching loss!
I'm thankful for this insightful article concerning one of the most important elections of my lifetime. I wholeheartedly agree and applaud Jeff Noble's courage to share wisdom which I'm confident comes from Biblical knowledge and the fear of God. I hope and pray that more pastors and Christ followers in general, myself included, will exercise courage to speak the truth in love for these critical times we live in.
No sitting on the sidelines friends or screaming from the stands. Get in the game. Know what each of these flawed candidates really stands for regardless of their parties or personalities. Pray for wisdom and go to the polls.
Well said, hatred dulls the mind, and makes fools of us all. Even as some are quick to sing Jesus loves red, and yellow, black and white and he does, but laws are there to protect one and all. Get off your platitudinal couch go visit Carlsbad, Roswell, Brownsville, Midland or Odessa or any number of towns in the Southwest and see the erosion of infrastructure and depletion of tax bases so that everyone is suffering.
Good read, Jeff. I loved this comment — “but let’s vote for a bigger picture, voting through Trump for the opportunity to have a voice, to influence, and to restrain the rampant evil that the Democratic Party’s unabashed extremism has bloomed.”
