Quick judgment on a false prophet
"In that same year, in the seventh month, the prophet Hananiah died." (Jeremiah 28.17)
Here's the context: God had sent a message urging the southern kingdom of Israel to turn back to .him, but they refused. He had promised that they would be conquered and Jerusalem destroyed by Babylon. However, false prophets were proclaiming peace and rebutting prophecies by men such as Jeremiah.
In chapter 28, Hananiah claims Jeremiah isn't hearing from The Lord and promises that Israel will defeat Babylon in two years. Yet, two months later, he's dead after he spoke lies. And Jeremiah continues to warn Israel.
Thought: If God judged lying prophets today with equal suddenness, it would bring stunning clarity to a noisy and often political church landscape.
The proof of a true prophet is in the results:
"As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes to pass, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.” (Jeremiah 28:9)
