Who is Jeff?

I’m an Arkansas native. In college, I started a graphic design/ad agency with a friend when "desktop publishing" was a new thing. Little did I know that within three years, I found myself with a compelling sense that God was calling me to serve in ministry.

I attended seminary from 1991-1995, all the while developing a philosophy of ministry I describe as "loving, loosening, and leading."

I served eight years as a collegiate minister on a campus in south Arkansas. In 2003, I helped plant a church and became a “pastor” for the first time. Because it started from “scratch,” I turned back to graphic design and learned learning web design (I say that loosely) to supplement our income. It also enabled me to build relationships in the community.

In the spring of 2009, I was contacted by Northstar Church in Blacksburg, Virginia about serving as their second pastor. The founding pastor, Bob Jackson had retired. After a lot of prayer, we believed God was directing us to Virginia, and we moved in July 2009.

I’ve been a consistent blogger at journeyguy.com since the fall of 2005. In December 2012, I self-published a book - Super Center Savior. It examines what the church can learn from big box stores like Walmart and encourages you to joyful 24/7 Christian influence.

Why subscribe?

If you don’t, your life will be monochrome. You’ll feel low energy and uninformed. You’ll miss out on some dad jokes, inspiration and your brain will eventually atrophy into a hard, little walnut.

On the other hand, if you subscribe, you will get full access to the newsletter and website.

Engage and connect

After the conservative purge of social media in the months following the 2020 election, I got off OSM (old social media). Yeah, I ditched it all - Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.1 I tried Gab and GETTR and even Truth Social as my old moniker of “journeyguy.” After Elon bought Twitter, I watched as conservative voices were given their accounts back, and I decided to get back - only to discover that a bot had my old account (journeyguy), so now I tweet at biblebeltman.2 Follow me there! You can also find me on Insta as journeyguy. I’d love to engage with you here in the comments and on social.

Join the journey

I’ve been blogging for a long time - almost 20 years! I’ve imported most of the old posts from my journeyguy.com blog here on Substack. I’m excited about creating more of a community of readers, encouragers, friends and those that will help me grow as well.
